As you might have heard in the national news, Ryan Moats of the Houston Texans was detained by Police Officer Robert Powell on March 26th. Moats was pulled over by the officer for rolling through a stop sign heading to the hospital.
So I keep reading about the death threats and a lot of people saying the officer was wrong for detaining Moats as he pleads with the officer that his mother in law is dying in the hospital. I have to side with the officer in this case.
While being an officer of the law at one time of my life, the officer was doing his job. How many times does an officer hear bull crap plea’s to get out of a ticket or a traffic stop? I bet way too many. Officers are charged with protecting us, the citizen and to enforce laws that our elected officials believe are for the well being of the greater public.
Traffic stops usually take about 10 min of your time if you comply with the officer, all Moats had to do was provide a valid license, and valid registration, and a valid insurance card and he could have been on his way.
After watching the in dash camera, Moats did all he could to ignore and to not comply with the officer. Pleading his case, which officers hear all the time, the officer stood to his standards and did his job.
So, after the media gets this info, all of a sudden, Officer Roberts is a bad guy, and a terrible police officer. For what; doing his job. I am deeply sorry for Moats mother in law and family, maybe he should had observed and obeyed the stop sign and he would have been in the hospital and seen his mother in law prior to her death.
Now, Officer Roberts is on leave with pay pending investigation. Why? He did his job people. We the people would have been very upset if Moats ran the stop sign as he did and killed a family of 4. We would have said, “Where are the police”. We would have said, “It would only take him 5 more seconds to reach is destination.
Public apology by the officer (which he did), give me a break, give the guy a medal, and put him back to work.
